Legend vs evidence

The Orloj’s Original Mechanism Predates Master Hanuš

On Prague City Tourism’s Legends of Prague page, the original simple mechanism is credited to Mikuláš of Kadaň before 1410, while Hanuš appears later as the clockmaker who perfected it.

The same official legend page places Mikuláš of Kadaň before Hanuš in the clock’s chronology.

Separate original construction from later legend

Prague City Tourism’s Legends of Prague page says Mikuláš of Kadaň constructed the original simple mechanism before 1410. It then places Hanuš of Růže later, at the end of the fifteenth century, as the clockmaker who perfected it.

Use chronology to resist a common shortcut

A famous legend can make one name dominate memory. The useful correction is narrower: on this official page, Hanuš belongs to a later stage of the Orloj Story rather than the original mechanism’s construction.

Keep legend and evidence labelled

The same page continues into the dramatic Hanuš narrative. Treat that narrative as legend context while preserving the page’s explicit chronological distinction between Mikuláš and Hanuš.
