The Orloj’s Original Mechanism Predates Master Hanuš
On Prague City Tourism’s Legends of Prague page, the original simple mechanism is credited to Mikuláš of Kadaň before 1410, while Hanuš appears later as the clockmaker who perfected it.

Hanuš was not first in the official chronology
Prague’s Astronomical Clock is surrounded by stories, and one famous name can easily swallow the others. Prague City Tourism’s own Legends of Prague page gives a useful sequence: it says Mikuláš of Kadaň constructed the original simple mechanism before 1410, while Hanuš of Růže appears later, at the end of the fifteenth century, as the clockmaker who perfected it.
Hanuš belongs to a later chapter
The popular habit of linking the whole Orloj with Master Hanuš compresses several stages into one name. Prague City Tourism gives a clearer sequence: an earlier mechanism associated with Mikuláš of Kadaň, followed later by Hanuš of Růže and his improvements.
History and legend can sit side by side
The same page continues with the darker legend of Hanuš. That story belongs to Prague folklore, but it is not the same thing as the clock’s construction chronology. The Orloj was altered and repaired over centuries, which makes the point visible in the object itself: a machine this complex has more than one chapter. Remembering two names in order — Mikuláš first, Hanuš later — already makes the story more accurate without making it any less mysterious.
