Charles Square Began as the New Town’s Big Market

Prague City Tourism says that after Charles IV founded the New Town, today’s Charles Square was called the Big Market and by the fifteenth century was known as the Cattle Market.

Its older names reveal a planned market function inside Charles IV’s New Town.

The scale makes sense once you imagine a market

Charles Square can feel oversized if read only as a park and traffic space. Prague City Tourism supplies the missing function. In Charles IV’s New Town, the square was known as the Big Market, and by the fifteenth century it was called the Cattle Market. Its enormous footprint belonged to planned urban commerce.

A market needs room for more than stalls

Exchange on this scale meant movement, animals, merchants, regulation and access from different parts of the new district. Thinking in those terms turns empty distance into useful capacity. The square was not “too large”; it was shaped for a civic function different from the landscaped one visitors see today.

Names preserve vanished uses

“Big Market” and “Cattle Market” act like labels on an older map. Neither describes the modern square, yet both reveal how Prague once understood the space. Historical place names are valuable precisely because land use can change while the geometry remains.

Walk the length to feel the original ambition

Crossing Charles Square on foot is the best way to grasp its scale. Instead of treating the long walk as dead space between monuments, imagine the area filled by a major market serving the newly founded town. The present park then becomes a later layer occupying an urban form created for a much more intensive public economy.
