Prague’s “Hairy Ghost” Still Survives in the City’s Legends
A strange Old Town apparition appears in Prague’s curated folklore and is linked in local retellings with the streets around the Holy Cross rotunda.

In Prague legend, Chlupáč is a filthy, hair-covered night creature said to stalk Konviktská and the lanes toward the Vltava, appearing around brothels on former church property.
The Hairy Ghost belongs to Prague folklore
In the local legend, Chlupáč is neither an ordinary man nor a polite white-sheet ghost. He is described as a man-like creature covered from head to toe in coarse, animal-like hair, dressed in dirty, old-fashioned clothes. He appears only at night. Some retellings compare him to a bear or gorilla; the Czech nickname comes from chlupatý — “hairy.” The darkest versions say he burst into brothels and attacked the women inside before disappearing as suddenly as he arrived.
Konviktská gives the legend its setting
The story places him around Konviktská, the narrow lanes leading toward the Vltava and the Rotunda of the Finding of the Holy Cross. One local retelling says the places he targeted shared an unsettling detail: they occupied property that had once belonged to the Church and later passed into secular use. The legend even has Chlupáč escaping toward the river and vanishing into tunnels, turning this small part of Old Town into his nocturnal territory.
What is legend, and what is real Prague
The setting is real; the monster is folklore. The Romanesque rotunda still stands at Konviktská and Karoliny Světlé, and Prague City Tourism includes the Hairy Ghost among the city’s legends. Claims about murders, police chases and a hairy attacker come from later folklore retellings, not verified criminal records. That distinction does not weaken the tale — it lets you walk the real streets while knowing exactly where history ends and the ghost story begins.
