Smíchov’s Streets Still Carry the Memory of an Industrial District
Prague City Tourism’s “Prague Manchester” walk points to former mills, match factories, porcelain works and the Ringhoffer industrial empire in Smíchov.
Smíchov, Prague

Shopping centres and offices sit on streets that once organised factories, mills and a major engineering empire.
Imagine factories where offices and shops stand now
Smíchov has changed so thoroughly that its industrial past can be hard to recover from the present streetscape. Prague City Tourism helps reconstruct it by naming gasworks, a steam mill, match works, porcelain production and the Ringhoffer family’s industrial empire. The neighbourhood was not built around a single factory but around a dense ecology of production.
Industry leaves traces even after buildings disappear
Former factory districts often survive through scale more than ornament. Large plots, transport corridors, service yards and redevelopment parcels can preserve the dimensions of industrial land long after the machinery is gone. Historical maps are particularly useful in Smíchov because so much of the visible architecture has changed.
“Manchester” is shorthand; the real story is the variety of industry
Comparisons with Manchester capture the concentration of industry, but Smíchov had its own mix of production. Prague City Tourism points to engineering, milling, match making, porcelain and urban infrastructure. The interesting part today is the scale of the change. Knowing what once stood around Anděl and Na Knížecí gives the offices, shops and redevelopment around them a much deeper economic background.
