The city’s tourism authority says the Marian Column was erected in 1650 by Emperor Ferdinand III as thanks to the Virgin Mary for Prague’s defence against Swedish troops in 1648. That gives the monument a precise seventeenth-century context. It was not simply a generic devotional column placed in the square for decoration.
Its later history became politically charged
The column did not keep one uncontested meaning. It was pulled down in 1918 and a replica returned to Old Town Square in 2020. Those later episodes show how monuments can accumulate interpretations very different from the circumstances of their original construction.
