Kafka’s birthplace house itself disappeared, but the location and one Baroque portal survived urban renewal.

Begin with the birthplace, not the monument

Kafka’s Prague is crowded with later memorials and literary associations. Prague City Tourism gives a clean starting point: he was born on 3 July 1883 at the house called U věže and lived there with his parents for his first two years. Biography begins with one specific Old Town address.

Notice what urban renewal changed

The original house did not survive intact. The city source says it was demolished during later urban renewal, while a Baroque stone portal survived and was incorporated into the replacement building. This makes the location useful for thinking about memory in a changing city: a birthplace can remain culturally important even when much of its original fabric is gone.

Keep survival claims precise

Do not point to the present facade and call it the exact house Kafka saw as an infant. The more interesting and accurate story is the layered one: same birthplace location, later building, surviving portal, and subsequent memorialisation. Prague’s Kafka geography is strongest when it distinguishes original fabric from later commemoration.
