Defenestration
The First Prague Defenestration Happened at the New Town Hall in 1419
Prague City Tourism says a crowd threw officials from the New Town Hall windows on 30 July 1419, marking the start of the Hussite revolution.
New Town Hall, Charles Square

One facade became the site of an event whose name — defenestration — now defines a whole category of Prague political memory.
Put the event back into architecture
“Defenestration” can sound like a historical vocabulary word detached from place. The New Town Hall makes it physical. Prague City Tourism says the first Prague defenestration happened there on 30 July 1419 and marked the start of the Hussite revolution. The building is therefore not just a preserved civic monument; its windows belong to a remembered political event.
Read facade and square together
Stand on Charles Square and look at the hall as a civic institution facing public space. The event involved a procession, confrontation and a crowd entering the building. You do not need to reconstruct an exact window from street level to understand the spatial logic: authority occupied the town hall, political pressure gathered outside, and violence crossed the boundary between square and interior.
Keep the numbered sequence straight
Prague has more than one famous defenestration, so the adjective “first” matters here because the source explicitly uses it. The 1419 New Town Hall event should not be confused with the much later 1618 defenestration at Prague Castle. Keeping site and date together is the simplest memory tool: New Town Hall — 1419 — first Prague defenestration.
