Before House Numbers, Prague Facades Helped Identify the House

Prague City Tourism says house signs were used to distinguish burgher and merchant houses long before Maria Theresa imposed house numbering in 1770.

Before a number on the wall, a painted or carved sign could tell you which house you had reached.

Read the facade as an address system

A carved animal or painted object on a Prague facade can look like pure decoration. Historically it could also help identify the house. Prague City Tourism says that long before Maria Theresa imposed house numbering in 1770, burgher and merchant houses were distinguished by house signs incorporated into their facades. That turns ornament into urban information.

Notice the vocabulary of objects

The city source mentions animals, plants, objects, crafts and celestial bodies among common motifs. Once you know that, Nerudova Street becomes a visual reading exercise. Instead of looking only for architectural style, scan above doorways and around facade ornament for recognisable objects. A sign can survive even when the original practical need has disappeared.

Connect sign and name

The strongest clue is linguistic. Prague City Tourism explains that the sign was reflected in the name of the whole house. That is why names such as At the Three Violins or At the Black Sun make sense as more than quaint branding. The building name once pointed back to something visible on the facade. Modern street numbers did not erase that older layer of orientation; the names and signs preserved it.
